Methodology of the editorial B2B benchmark · version September 2026

How we compare

What this benchmark is, and isn't

This comparison is an editorial B2B benchmark: a substantiated judgment based on publicly available information. It is not an independent product test. We have not measured the products in our own test environment, and scores say nothing about performance in your specific environment.

The goal isn't to name one universally best product, but to make visible the differences between types of solutions: managed backup services, broad platforms, endpoint backup, and NAS/cloud-oriented services.

Sources

The assessment is based on official product pages, pricing pages, documentation, and information about support, recovery, and security. Every score has a justification and a source reference with a source ID (for example, MT-3). Behind every source ID, our source register holds the exact URL, the date accessed, and an archived copy.

Where public information isn't specific enough, we note that in the justification and refer to verification via a quote, contract, or technical test. Information that isn't public is not used for scoring.

Rating scale

■ Limited1–4▲ Average5–6◆ Strong7–8● Excellent9–10
All scores in this benchmark fall here

Every provider gets a score from 1 to 10 per criterion. The score is relative: it reflects how strongly a solution meets the criterion within this comparison, from the perspective of the business audience (SMBs and MSPs in the Netherlands and Europe).

ScoreBadgeMeaning
9–10●ExcellentClearly distinguishing and broadly applicable within the target audience.
7–8◆StrongUsable well, with relevant limitations or dependencies.
5–6▲AverageSuitable for certain scenarios, but less predictable or less broad.
1–4■LimitedImportant parts are missing or require significant additional products or setup.

Badges combine a symbol, a text label, and a color, so they remain readable even without color perception.

Why all scores fall between 7 and 10

The five providers were deliberately chosen as established, serious business solutions. None of them falls fundamentally short on any criterion, which is why scores below 7 don't occur in this selection. That also means small differences in total score (for example, 0.2 of a point) mean little: the justification per criterion and the "best for" line matter more than the total figure.

The six criteria

CriterionWhat we weighNote
Price & total costWe assess price predictability, license and storage model, included service, and possible extra costs for restores, support, or modules. The lowest entry price does not automatically get the highest score.
Storage & scalabilitySupported workloads, storage expandability, multi-tenant capability, and suitability for growth from SMB to enterprise.Unlimited storage within a single product type doesn't count as broad scalability.
Security & complianceEncryption, MFA, immutable or locked storage, ransomware resilience, data location, and support for compliance goals (GDPR, NIS2 and the Dutch Cybersecurity Act (Cbw), ISO 27001).A compliance claim isn't the same as certified compliance for every configuration.
Ease of managementInstallation, daily monitoring, automation, central dashboards, reporting, and the amount of specialist knowledge required.A managed service and a self-service product are judged on the management burden for the customer, not the number of features.
Support & serviceAvailability of support, local or partner support, managed service, monitoring, and how much help is part of the offering.Response times only count if they're publicly documented.
Recovery & continuity (RPO/RTO)Granularity of restores, version control, bulk and instant recovery, disaster recovery capabilities, recovery testing, and publicly stated RPO/RTO values.Actual performance depends on workload, network, infrastructure, and contract.

What we don't score, but do show as fact

Some characteristics matter to the target audience but are factual in nature. We show these as fact in the table and in the filters, separate from the score: data location, the country of the parent company (relevant to the US CLOUD Act), the pricing model, managed or self-service, and the company size a service is aimed at. That way you can decide for yourself how heavily to weigh those characteristics.

Calculation

889999
= 52 ÷ 6 = 8.67 →8.7

The total score is the arithmetic mean of the six criterion scores. All criteria carry equal weight, for every provider. That's deliberately simple and verifiable, but it also means organizations with a different risk profile may weigh the outcome differently: an organization with strict DR requirements might weigh recovery more heavily than price.

Example: scores of 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, and 9 add up to 52; divided by 6 that's 8.67, rounded to one decimal, 8.7. Rounding doesn't change the underlying scores.

Equal rules for every provider

Most business services make RPO, RTO, and response times partly dependent on contract, workload, or configuration. That's why we apply one rule to everyone:

  • The score reflects what is publicly documented for the target audience's typical scenario.
  • When a performance figure depends on contract, edition, partner, or setup, that is stated explicitly in the justification and in the weaknesses.
  • A value that only appears in a quote or contract earns no extra points.
  • Competitors score highly where their publicly documented capabilities warrant it.

Handling different propositions

The five providers aren't fully alike. For each provider, we state at the top of the review which product or variant was assessed:

ProviderAssessed proposition
MindtimeMindtime Backup-as-a-Service (managed) for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, virtual and physical servers, databases, NAS, endpoints, and cloud workloads. The separate DRaaS service is not included in the scores.
AcronisAcronis Cyber Protect Cloud (for MSPs and service providers) and Acronis Cyber Protect (for organizations themselves): backup, recovery, and endpoint protection in a single platform.
VeeamVeeam Data Platform (including Veeam Backup & Replication) and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. Veeam is software: the customer or their service provider chooses the storage and data location.
BackblazeBackblaze Business Backup (endpoint backup for laptops and workstations). B2 Cloud Storage is only mentioned where it affects the assessment.
Synology C2Synology C2 Storage for Hyper Backup (NAS backup, also part of the C2 OneStorage plan) and C2 Backup (endpoint and Microsoft 365 backup). C2 Object Storage is mentioned separately where relevant.

Currency, corrections, and score history

  • We check all providers at least once a quarter. Every review shows the "Last checked" date.
  • If a score changes, we note that with date and reason on the /corrections-and-updates/ page.
  • Anyone can report a correction, including providers themselves. We respond within and process valid corrections at the next update, or sooner for factual errors.
  • Assessment and final editing:.

All scores form an editorial benchmark based on publicly available product information, not an independent product test. Always check current quotes, SLAs, and terms yourself before purchasing. Information is reviewed at least every quarter.
